Dear Friend,

Personal Note On A Personal Note...

Thank you all so much for your kind letters and sentiments regarding the end of Starting Over. Though SO is no longer taping new shows, it continues to run in syndication in more than a dozen countries and on cable in some US cities. I love hearing from my SO sisters all around the world and learning that we all have the same concerns, hopes and dreams in life, beauty and fashion!

Just like many of you, I am forever changed by the love, support and inspiration of my Starting Over family. I am passionately continuing on the path illuminated for me by SO and have many exciting projects that will keep us connected to my mission of helping women everywhere. I KNOW that a change of image can change a life and I am here to help!

I will be back in your homes, having fun on your TV, enthusiastically teaching you how to look your best on a budget before you know it! Cents of Style will always be your source for all things thrifty chic and you can count on me to be your loveable "Fit Enforcer", creating better shape wherever I roam!

The future is sunshine bright, and SO was just the beginning! We all owe it to the incredible people who helped us Start Over to live life out loud... never wear bad clothes... and never spend more money than we have to! (Wink!)

Be happy! Be beautiful! Be thrifty!

When I was growing up we always had a tube of Alberto VO5 Conditioning Hairdressing in the bathroom cabinet. My grandmother used it on our unruly hair, but she also used it on shoes, zippers, leather, wood furniture, plant leaves and my old softball glove. It seems that the 5 organic conditioners in VO5 have shine and lubricating properties that make it an incredible household tool.

I had forgotten how useful it was until I saw an old Heloise article, so I thought I would share just a few of the ways a dab of Alberto VO5 (retails for $3.29 a tube) can save you time and money.
  • Prevents silver from tarnishing. Apply a thin coat of Alberto VO5 Conditioning Hairdressing with a soft cloth to clean, polished, dry silver. Wipe off excess leaving behind a very thin, virtually invisible, protective coating. VO5's organic protectants actually prevent tarnishing.
  • Removes an adhesive bandage safely and painlessly.
  • Makes zippers glide easily.
  • Safe and naturally lubricates drawers, window tracks, door hinges and plumbing joints.
  • Conditions leather and protects leather shoes and boots from winter salt and ice.
  • Protects your dog or cat's paw pads in the summer and in the winter, plus, detangles and softens their coat.
  • Hides scratches on wood furniture.
  • Removes candle wax drippings from candlestick holders.
  • Cleans and shines plant leaves.
  • Makes golf clubs sparkle.
  • Prevents paint splatters on windows, hinges, doorknobs, and lock latches. Coat them with Alberto VO5 Conditioning Hairdressing to prevent paint from adhering to the surfaces. After painting, wipe clean with a cloth.

Sally Hansen Vitamin E Cuticle and Nail Oil Have You Tried...

Sally Hansen Vitamin E Cuticle and Nail Oil?

I am always washing my hands, which is great for reducing the spread of germs, but my hands and specifically my cuticles take a beating. I recently tried Sally Hansen's Cuticle Oil for my painfully dry, cracked and pealing cuticles and I love it.

This cuticle oil contains a natural essential oil complex of wheat germ oil, aloe, apricot kernel oil, safflower oil and panthenol which helps it absorb quickly and moisturize deeply. I also found that it helps my nails from chipping and it keeps my manicure looking fresh and healthy all week long.

Of course, the most important feature is the price! I found it for under $5 bucks at my local drugstore. Check it out here if you'd like to order it on line.

Sixth Cents - Plaid

We are used to seeing plaid on the gentlemen of Saville Row, old golfers, lumber jacks and most recently the grunge rockers of Seattle. But this season, when it comes to plaid, the girls have invaded the old boys club!

While out shopping, you'll find fresh and fun uses of plaid in ultra feminine skirts and dresses, accessories with moxie and boy clothes given a girly twist.

As always, the easiest and least expensive way to wear a trend is with accessories. Look for fun colorful plaids that will unify both your favorite and under-utilized pieces in your wardrobe. You can use the color pallet of the plaid to match items you would have never worn together before!
